गूगल हिंदी अनुवाद की पेशकश – or Birth of Hingoole ? May 6, 2008

गूगल हिंदी अनुवाद की पेशकश” is the Google way of saying “Google offers Hindi translation”.

Google has done once again next to impossible. May 2008 “Google offers Hindi translation” for Indian people. Not only Hindi, but Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam are also part of new development.

Using this feature, user will be able to translate online from English to Hindi and vice-versa.

Translating English to Hindi may not be of so much difficult as, translating Hindi to English. Being computer freak I know the difficulty, to parse the grammar of Hindi language through computer programming. And in either case, translating sentence from one language to another is itself challenge. But at the bottom of the translation-engine is the rule for placing Subject, verb and object in proper sequences. Simple translation of each word does work.

But as everyone might be guessing. The Google translator is not perfect. In simple sentence it will give good result, but in complex sentence, it gives alot of error. Error not only in Words, but also in syntex. Where word is complex, translator put the word as it is.


“”“I love you””= “” मैं प्रेम आप “” – Sentence with Quote

“I love you” = “मैं आपसे प्यार करता / करती हूँ – Sentence without Quote

But some of the problem are in the area where it is proper noun. Suppose If someone named “Sher Singh” appears in sentence, then it will be translated to Lion Tiger.

“, शेर-शायरी” = “, The lion – poetry”

शेर-शायरी” = “Sher – poetry”

I found a way to deceive translator in a while. Its Case sensitive. Like,

“Tiger is strong” = “टाइगर मजबूत है”

“tiger is strong” = “बाघ मजबूत है”

Right now in summary I can only say, Google translator fumbles away with literal dictionary words when one tries complex sentences, idiomatic usage or slang words. The Hindi translation of the summary line is “फिलहाल में सार का कहना है कि मैं ही कर सकते हैं , गूगल अनुवादक fumbles दूर शब्दों के साथ शाब्दिक शब्दकोश की कोशिश करता है जब एक जटिल वाक्यों , शब्दों में बोली या उपयोग मुहावरेदार”. What language is this? Can you make it out? Let say it “Hingoole”. A Google standard Hindi + English.

When Hindi mixed with English, we had Hinglish. Now Google made it Hingoole or Hingoolish. Which one sounds better :)?

If you are able to make anything out of this new Google tool, start using. Your Hindi proficient parents will simple have boundless happiness with the new google offer. Give a try with some Hindi movie songs and films title names, and see it for yourself @|hi


Mission Impossible – Code DU July 17, 2006

India hopes of to do, which is supposed to be impossible. But this mission impossible has become mission successful to many of the bright student today. Today is the first day of academic calendar in

Like each year, this year too, there was a lot of rush of new students in North campus streets. Cars, rickshaws, bikes, and peddlers, every one moving into zigzag direction, finding their first day in college.

A long queue in front of each college gate to get entry inside the college boundary, ID card verification by security personal standing as firewall. And student querying about Class rooms.

Mission Impossible – II.

Next phase, Security agencies have hand over for mission impossible project. Can these agencies ensure that DU is going to be a safe place for the newcomers? No non-serious, social loafers are going to leverage advantages.

Its very tough task, what every security personal is doing is really Mission Impossible, and a lot of thanks to them for making mission possible.

Can we improve upon the mechanism? Off course yar. There is always chance of improvement. Tell , what are the chance of improvement. Hmmmmm… Add more security personals, checking at more points, close circuit cameras, mobile patrolling and etc. Great na  !!!! But what are etc ? hmmmm ?? hmmmm?? hmmmm??

“Dimag ki bati jal gaei”, one more idea, smart card. Yeehhhhhhhhh.hurrrraayyyy I found it.

But boss, what are you talking about. What is this smart card ?

Well, buddhu, Metro rail… smart people use smart card… smart card yar, a rechargeable rectangular card, that u can carry to home.  Ab samajh may aaya.

Now you have a question…. boss, it is true, it is possible, it may be possible in US,
UK, but in
India….. impossible.

Wait.. wait.. It is possible. If metro train, just 100 meter away can implement the concept and use the technology, then why notDelhi

Ø      Use Smart card, in the place of ID card.

Ø      Install identification (scanning) machine at the gate of each college.

This will solve almost the entire problem. Only student will be able to enter college. The fake ID card problem will be solved. Security personal do not have to argue with social loafers, and few security personal will have to stand in front of gate.

Let’s hope. The
Mission impossible does not remain impossible, and DU listen it, and make it mission possible soon.


Managing RMG Pool May 19, 2006

From the day, a fresher joins Software Company, he starts cursing RMG. Probably this is the first place after HR dept in software industry, which decides one’s faith.

I have some of the interesting experience with RMG. and I am sure everyone has their own share of experience to share. And I also remember an incident in Chennai, when whole of the 2 trainee batches (Around 50 freshers) were transferred to their home location due to one of my friend had some hot issues with RMG. Oh.. Unlucky previous two batches…

Yes, thinking .. What is RMG?? Great, Resource Management Group. People in software very well know this dept. Company name this dept to their choice, but the basic work is same. A dept to manage pool of unutilized people.

Every company in India today is facing problem of bench. Again, a word quite famous in software industry, but not written any where in documented. When a person is not allocated to any project (or say dept), he remains with RMG pool. Doing nothing, just moving around, asking friends in proj, what they have done today; trying to get hold of some friend so that he/she can check mail on his/her computer; hanging around cafeteria and library at best. And worst, spoiling fresher career.

Every company will have their own story, projecting minimized figure of RMG pool. But what ever they speak, all knows the size of it. India, I think 30 % of the people are on bench.

Now my question is, can we utilize these resources (fresher) to benefit organization? Answer is, yes, it can be done.

We can have a PL(Project leader), TL(Team Lead), TL (Tech lead), PM(Project Manager) and the team members from the resources. Let them decide what they want to do, what they want to experiment, what they want to design, what they want to develop, and what they want to learn.

Have the look at the assumptions behind the idea

1. Every company wants to do R&D, but they have not succeeded so far. Because once they are allocated inside a project, they code the same piece of code once again. The monotonous work of any project is not suitable for innovation.

2. The fresh idea, in the fresher out of college is full, and they have energy, enthusiasm, boundary less idea, eager to do some thing, and determination to prove them shelf.

3. The resource in RMG pool is not productive. They seats ideal. Company just need to give them a PC, which is equivalent to their one month salary(approx).

4. People on bench got demotivated as the time pass. The energy level goes down seeing the friends and people on projects. Smart people manage them self and find place in B’schools. And some prefer browsing

If we could properly manage these resources, they could be a new source of talented pool, creating value for the organization. But it needs some determination and some thinking on the side of top management.

And it will not be far that, these “Resource pool” will change to “Talent pool”. Creating new channel of profit to the organization through their innovative ideas and outcome. The outcome can be as

1. White papers for organization
2. New system design
3. New innovative software products
4. R&D practice
5. Creating learning organization.

Puzzling, and thinking…, this sounds good…hmmm.. But how it can be implemented. Well the implementation model looks like this,

1. Make compulsory provision for the entire fresher in RMG pool, that they have to publish an industry study paper in a week, a suggested improvement in that particular industry. Finding problems areas in the industry, possible solution for the problems. Key issues in the industry.
The time frame for each piece of expected outcome is predetermined and als the standard for all resources is outlined.
2. There should be a pool of management, which will monitor and manage these resources, and the outcome is deliverables to the top managements from time to time. These management people can be from RMG pool as well as from some other projects (voluntarily part time) or a dedicated team of people.
3. RMG pool will be divided into a number of teams, same as the real projects, each team consisting a dedicated number of resources for entire cycle of the project. Each team having its own PL, PM, TL and etc.
4. When RMG need resources from the pool to be allocated to the client projects, they can do that at any point of time. But keeping in mind that there is optimum loss to over all work being carried by RMG pool.

And what is the outcome,
1.People will get vertical specific knowledge; introduction, problem, best in class solution, improvement ideas, and etc; even before joining any particular client project.
2. And at best condition, organization can expect useful tools, software products, innovative ideas and many more results coming out of these talented bunches of peoples.

Hope thing idea makes sense.

Kosmix: Desi Pride February 25, 2006

Another big challenge to Google. More than MicroSoft, kosmix is trying to touch sensitive area of google. Web search business. Yes, kosmix, which claim to have different search engine than google is in fact little different from google. I tried for around 15 min yesterday. As they claim, search was really crisp; all the search result link were very much relevant. kosmix claim to have more understanding of users behaviour. Most of the users do not go beyound first page of result. Even if they donot find result on first page, users prefer to resubmit search with different keyword. Thus google multi page, 1000s of suggested links becomes useless. Also, the search logic is little different. than Google . kosmix search pages on the content basis, beyond links pointing web pages, as done by google.
  But i want to say to kosmix, curbing search results and decreasing number of results, do not make it closer to users. kosmix claim, even if user do not go beyound first page result, I think google is not loosing any thing. But kosmix may loose serious users who like to go beyond first page result. Curbing on the number of results may sometime restrict some of good links from suggested link.

About my preference, I like google, and simply a great fan of it. I have explored a number of ways on googling. Atleast buy now, I can claim I know more methods of searching, than claimed on goolge page. Donot be confused, I don’t submit more queries, or I have magic words, and neither do I know how to hack google. It is only practice that had made me more professional in extracting much relevent informtion on relevent times. For example you cannot submit simple search when you want current information about any company, submit search on News category. Here you will get current information , may be just an hour old news about company, which is more relevant and current. Try this before going to some company interview. Like this there are many other ways. Hope in some discussion, we will explore some of the googling techniques…………. And this is the main reason where google will have lead over kosmix. yes, u guessed, kosmix donot have news, or blog or image etc category. If you haven’t tried more option than simple search in google, than I suggest you to try some more also.

Yes more important and excitement about I donot want to miss this. kosmix is the brain child of Indian, mallu. Venky Harinarayan, Founder has exp in Another founder is Anand Rajaraman, again from Amazon. There are 3  Indian out of 4 people in management broad. Great pride for Indian.

Nasa World Wind

Google should by now start thinking about competitors. Microsoftware will take a breath now.  For time being MS will be more than happy with the news that some of the google domain area is being challenged by other players.
In the last two days I have came across two applications which can challenge google dominance. Nasa World Wind and kosmix are the two words in this series. I will talk about NWW here. Kosmix we will discuss in next section.
  Nasa World Wind(NWW) is substitute of Google Earth(GE), a software application to navigate world on finger tips. GE when released almost a year back made a really big impression on users. People were more than happy to see their building’s top on world net. Some people started locating their gali and nukad.
  GE also had to face some wrath from Govt Agencies from White house to Red flag Dragon. Indian Govt too managed to remove some sensitive images from GM satellite map.
  NWW is a step ahead in Earth locating and browsing. They offer a lot type of images from different satellites. You have to select the satellite type before browsing. Picture quality is fantastic. What I liked was the horizontal inclination, means seeing the earth horizontal perspective as if seeing earth from a TV tower rather than a satellite. Truly 3D.  Another wonderful feature was more than earth. Guess what ??? Yes.. beyond earth, you can even browse on moon surface. Certainly more than GE. In the short period(about 10 min) of my browsing , NWW really impressed me.
 But NWW has to improve on certain account. NWW focus more on geography rather than human habitation. So no point of wasting your time on finding your car in the parking plot. Second was, even though their quality of image is good , but only upto certain height. You cannot zoom much closer to your school building or play ground area.
 Hope NWW will make a great improvement and reach a new height of success.

Heritage of ‘Ctrl + C’ & ‘Ctrl + V’ February 15, 2006

“Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” is quite common practice in Indian glamorous intellectual. If the success story of Indian brand in Foreign places is to be considered, “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” has played a major roll. Do you know India for the first time had its trade surplus, Why ?? Guess:). Ans is  Due to “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V”.  Yes, if today’s Indian Software market is to be seen, then “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” have helped our software developer immensely. Young, dynamic, brilliant, intelligent developer inside IT industry knows how to use “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” efficiently and effectively (another phrase in B-school). Yes, popular Quote goes “Work smart, not hard“. I have always been fan of “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V”, since the day I touched keyboard.  When did I start using keyboard??? Any guesses!!! 2nd semester. But you will wonder how? Any guess, Copy paste (smart answer??).  When we had assignment for our C programs, only some of the fandu guys can crack the problems. Rest people (like us) use to do smart work. Copy the program on your hard disk, and start changing the Variables & Functions names (and if required change some logic as well). And your smart work is over. This smart work paid off till we passed of our college.

         Do you think, only Computer Guys can do smart work??? Then you are wrong. We inculcated this culture from first semester of college. Only the form was different. We had engineering drawing practical session compulsory for all Engg student (irrespective of the branch). Then we inherited the culture of TOPO (in some colleges it is known as topa or what ever u say). Again a fundu guy does hard work drawing sheet, rest will make sketch of it. I think topo is the short for topology (wordweb definition of topology: The branch of pure mathematics that deals only with the properties of a figure X that hold for every figure into which X can be transformed with a one-to-one correspondence that is continuous in both directions).

   But thinking back to school days (or even in the college, we called it as chothaa in RECD), we find that, topo idea was just a extension of copying notebook.

 Observing carefully, we see that, each one of us, till college life, have tried to do their work smartly, and off course by bringing different methodology in their core competency( drawing for Mech Engg, Coding for Comp Engg, hand written assignment for all of us).

 What do you think, people stops smart working after engineering. Hmmm… no no donot think so, they are so brilliant, how can B-school grads do it ?( Even if they want, How can they?) Their core competency is said to be in PowerPoint presentation. Well I do not want to answer it. Ask some B-grads to give a presentation on this topic, and find it your self.

xcv.jpg But the bottom line, is “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” culture only with software people, or Engg grade, or in secondary school. I think it is more to do with Indian mind set. Have anyone thought, why we are not able to develop products in IT sector (in which we pat our self). It is more to do with “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” mentality. We understand how to manage their source codes, but we don’t develop or suggest our model to suit their application. We feel easy in copying their model and suggesting on the similar line. That is why I think, we are best in application maintenance rather than product development. Only due to “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” mentality, I will say, we are more confident in copy concatenating western culture too (a very controversial topic, will discuss some other day).

We need to change the “Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V” psychology, if we want India to be the leader (as B-schools inspire us to be) country in world, because, follower cannot inculcate leadership quality.
